Fostering FAQs

What are the basic requirements for becoming a foster carer?

To become a foster carer, you must be over eighteen. If you are not the owner/head of your home, you must have permission from the owner/head to foster an animal. While in your care, a foster dog/pup/kitten must not be left alone for frequent periods exceeding four hours, for adult cats this period is extended to six hours due to their greater independence. Also, to become a foster carer, you must agree with the terms or our Fostering Contract, samples of which can be found at the end of this brochure.

Is fostering expensive?

While you are fostering an animal for Mo Chara Animal Rescue, we will provide food, bedding, and all other equipment needed, however as we are a charity we welcome and appreciate any help towards these provisions. Any veterinary attention required by the foster animal will also be paid for by us, BUT you must notify us immediately if the animal becomes ill, and bring them to the Veterinary Practice agreed in the Fostering Contract. If you fail to notify us of any illness, or if you bring the animal to an unapproved vet without due cause, you may be liable for the fee's incurred.

When and for how long will I have my Foster Animal?

As soon as we have an animal in need who is suitable for your circumstances, we will notify you and you may then come and meet the animal before deciding whether you are ready to offer them a temporary home. Sometimes, a period of time may pass before we have an animal suitable for your circumstances, in these cases, we ask you to be patient and to notify us if your availability to foster changes.

Fostering periods can range from a few days to a few months, but ideally we seek foster carers who can offer an animal a temporary home until it finds its permanent home as routine and structure are extremely comforting to animals, especially dogs.

What happens if things don't work out?

If you are experiencing ANY difficulty at any stage during your foster period, we urge you to contact us straight away so that we can try to help you to resolve the issues. We will give you as much support as our resources allow, however, if you wish you may bring the animal back to us at any time.
